Get to Know Northside’s High School History Teacher
C.S. Lewis once wrote, “History is a story written by the finger of God.” At Northside Christian Academy, we couldn’t agree more. That’s why history at our Christian high school in Charlotte, N.C., is taught from a Biblical perspective and embodies a Christian worldview. To gain a little more insight into what this means and how it shapes the way we teach, we sat down with Northside’s high school history teacher, Mr. David Nelson. What’s more, we quickly discovered he’s one interesting guy. You’ll see what we mean below:
Alright, let’s chat…
What do you enjoy most about working at Northside Christian Academy?
The Christian atmosphere and being among people who love God and care for you.
What is one thing no student should leave Northside Christian Academy without knowing?
Every student should know that they are loved by God and that He wants a relationship with them provided through the gift of His son, Jesus.
How is history different at Northside Christian Academy than it may be at other private or Christian high schools in Charlotte, N.C.?
History is “His Story;” therefore it is important for students to see the hand of God at work in various periods of time. History is all about the divine providence of God.
What is your favorite area of history to teach? To learn about?
Modern times: World War 2; the Kennedy years; the Reagan years. To learn about the lives of our American heroes and why they became heroes.
How would you say your teaching philosophy differs from other teachers?
I have no judgment on other teachers. My philosophy is to make sure I am prepared to teach and serve my students and to make sure they are enriched with history, and more importantly, enriched with life.
Now, a few questions just for fun…
If you were left on a deserted island, what three things would you want to bring?
My Bible, my family, and peanut butter crackers.
If you could meet one historical figure, who would it be and why?
Ronald Reagan. He is the person most responsible for helping me shape my conservative, political values. He was a man dedicated to his God, family, and country.
If you could attend a lecture hosted by one historical figure, who would it be and why?
Adolf Hitler. I would love to hear him explain why he committed his diabolical actions.
What is your favorite part of Northside’s school year?
The Junior Trip.
What is your favorite part of a typical school day?
Greeting the different students during each class period.
What is the most memorable thing that has ever happened to you while teaching?
As I stood in line to vote during a presidential election, I looked behind me and saw a student who was voting for the first time. Needless to say, I was proud to see that he was doing his patriotic duty. That will go down as one of my greatest memories as a teacher!
