Northside’s Bands Play in ACSI Festival
04May, 2012
On Friday, March 23, the senior high and middle school bands traveled to Southside Christian School in Greenville, SC to take part in the ACSI Band Festival. Under the direction of Mr. John Page, these young musicians represented their school and the music program well. In a festival such as this the students play for judges who are distinguished in their professions and who give ratings and feedback.
The students arrived early that morning to travel in Northside’s big charter bus driven by Mr. Todd
Hollins. When a band travels, there is much equipment to be transported, but all was loaded and by 7 AM they were pulling out for the 1 ½ hour drive down I-85. The middle school band played first, performing “Imperium” by Michael Sweeney and “Furioso” by Robert W. Smith. They earned a “Superior” rating for their work, with one judge commenting, “You have a lot of great things going on!” and another praising them for rhythmical accuracy.

With their performance of “Chorale” from Jupiter by Gustav Holst, and “Jackson Lake Overture” by Mark W. Williams, the senior high band earned an excellent rating. The Holst piece in particular was a lyrical style which is challenging. A judge commented, “Nice job on a tough selection.” We’re proud of this band for stretching to present a difficult selection and not settling for “the easy way out.” The judges seemed to appreciate it too.
Both of NCA’s bands did a great job at the band festival and came away with a learning experience that will only make them better in days to come. Thank you, Mr. Page and bands for your good work. Keep playing “Soli Deo Gloria” – for God’s glory alone.
