A Day in the Life of a Preschool Student at NCA
Sending your little one to preschool is an exciting time. Soon they will begin exploring the building blocks of education while growing and developing in many different ways. While the thought of your child learning in a classroom setting is exciting, this is also a time when emotions run high. You may wonder if they’re socially ready, if they’re prepared for structured learning, or if they’ll be comfortable in their new environment. You are not alone — many parents experience these hesitations while choosing a preschool for their child. At Northside Christian Academy, we have found that nothing helps more than becoming familiar with our daily schedule of activities. With a clear picture of your child’s days to come, you can rest easy, knowing they are in excellent hands, having a blast, and building strong foundations for a life of learning.
A Typical Preschool Day at NCA
Welcome Play: A new day has begun! We “break the ice” by allowing students to participate in choice-centered activities. This starts each morning on a fun and positive note, while allowing students the opportunity to socialize and get comfortable with their peers.
Morning Snack: Traveling to school and getting warmed up sure works up an appetite! Students enjoy a snack early on to refuel before a big day of learning.
Daily Routines: Students Pledge Allegiance to the American Flag, the Christian Flag, and the Bible. Coordinating songs make these routines exciting and easy to memorize. Students will also go over the calendar and the weather each morning. On Mondays, classroom helper jobs (such as line leader, flag holder, door holder, etc.) are assigned.
Bible Study: Always the first component of our curriculum, Bible study consists of story time, memory verses, and songs. Students are encouraged to ask questions, share their observations, and pray together daily.
Phonics: Early literacy is a high priority in our preschool program. We begin with letter recognition, sounds, and word formation and progress toward more advanced reading skills in preparation for kindergarten.
Numbers: Math is a universal language that students will use throughout their lives. We make this important subject relevant and fun, beginning with number recognition and developing skills such as counting, sorting, and sequencing.
Language Arts: Through hands-on activities, students explore many different subjects during this portion of the day. Focusing on concepts that relate to science, history, geography, and more, their eyes are opened to the world around them.
Enrichment Class: Always an adventure, students eagerly await a different enrichment class each day. Weekly, we rotate between music, art, Spanish, computer, and library.
Lunch: It’s the most delicious time of the day. Preschool students visit the school cafeteria to eat with their class after a full morning of learning. A hot lunch is provided, but students may bring lunch from home if they wish.
Nap: With full minds and bellies, young children get sleepy soon after lunch. Naptime is important to ensure students get the rest and rejuvenation needed to carry them through the rest of the school day and their afternoon routines.
Afternoon Play: Students enjoy a trip to the playground almost every day. On rainy days, the gym is available for special activities. Whenever possible, play activities integrate what is being learned in the classroom.
Dismissal: At the end of the day, students may be picked up by their parents, or continue the fun in NCA’s aftercare program. Our preschool is open from 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
