Faculty Spotlight – Cherry Reynolds
“Seeing a student when the light bulb goes off makes the job worth it. We’re laying important groundwork here…”
– Mrs. Cherry Reynolds, NCA Kindergarten Teacher
Most would agree that teachers make a lasting impression in the lives of their students. That’s why at Northside Christian Academy, we regard faculty as a key component in training future leaders — equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a difference in the world. Without our teachers, we certainly wouldn’t be recognized as a top private school in the Charlotte, N.C. area. We shine because of the light they bring through the doors each day. Each with a unique passion for their subject and a dedication to their students’ individual needs. One of these shining stars is kindergarten teacher Cherry Reynolds.
Before Mrs. Reynolds came to Northside Christian Academy, she had never considered working for a Christian school – much less teaching kindergarten. She’d prepared to teach high school English, but her plans changed when she experienced NCA. “During my time at UNCC, I had heard about Northside’s positive reputation and academic excellence in the community. I gave it a shot and immediately felt at home. The staff was outstanding and the families were welcoming”.
Making it her own
Her passion for the Kindergarten program is a blessing to students. Each day, she works with them in core subject areas including Bible studies, language arts, math and reading. Her reading circles are small, with only 2-3 children in each group. This gives her the opportunity to provide one-on-one attention and design a curriculum that facilitates each child’s unique learning style. Mrs. Reynolds regards this as some of the most meaningful time during the school day.
“Reading circles and small group time get me up close daily with each student. I think the personal attention lets them know I’m there for them. Even if it’s just a few minutes, I want them to know I value them”.
In addition to core subjects, Northside kindergartners study science and social studies weekly. Hands on activities and exploratory centers help students learn with their senses and bring the subject matter to life. “I love that I get to play so much throughout the day as I’m teaching. They don’t know that we’re learning, but I sure do!”
Above and beyond
Like Northside’s older students, the kindergartners engage in classes like PE, music, art and computer time on a weekly basis.
Mrs. Reynolds believes these broad opportunities, coupled with the small class size, makes the school unique from others in the Charlotte area. With only 12-15 students in a classroom, Northside Christian Academy is able to offer a nurturing environment without compromising the opportunities offered by a larger school. “For these reasons, I’ve committed my own child to a Northside education. As a parent, I know my child is getting a high-quality education in an inspiring environment.”
