On the Rise: 5 Ways Rising Seniors Can Prepare for a Big Year
With a new academic year fast approaching, many high school parents ask, “What can my child do to prepare?” High school, especially senior year, is an important time in each student’s life. If your student is preparing for college or their next step, NCA has some valuable tips. As a Christian college preparatory school in Charlotte, NC, it is our privilege to partner with each student as they discover God’s plan for their life.
Here are five ways that seniors can prepare for an important academic year before it even begins!
1. Summer Reading
It’s not too late to find a good page turner at a local library or bookstore. Reading is an excellent way to prepare for the academic rigor of senior year. Additionally, it naturally expands vocabulary which leads to higher test scores. Most seniors complete numerous standardized tests in preparation for college, so take advantage of this opportunity for increased performance.
2. College Visits
Because high school students are not in school, many colleges host open house events or info sessions during the summer months. Campuses are less lively, but students can still benefit from appointments with admissions staff and tours. When school begins, NCA students will have opportunities to be exposed to numerous colleges. Mark your calendar for the following events:
- CAIS College Fair – September 27
- Christian College Fair – September 29
- College Financial Aid Night – January 15
3. Volunteer
For rising seniors, there is immense value in trying new and productive activities. Students should make the most of summer days by seeking internships, volunteer opportunities or community service projects. When completing college applications, there will undoubtedly be a spot to discuss these activities. Additionally, they are great opportunities to begin building a resume.
4. Write an Essay
On top of a full academic load, extracurricular activities and other commitments, completing college applications can feel like a daunting task. Past NCA seniors have shared that lengthy applications with tight deadlines are taxing, especially those that require an essay. Rising seniors can get ahead of the game by writing a generic admissions essay. Even if it needs to be slightly reworked for each application, a starting draft or outline will save significant time. Students can get ideas by exploring these Common Application Essay Prompts.
5. Research Financial Needs
Compile a list of 10 prospectives colleges, then research tuition and living costs. Each student should have a good idea of which colleges will fit their financial needs before applying. Several financial aid calculators are available to assist students with the process. Additionally, rising seniors should be researching scholarships provided by their prospective college. Resources like finaid.org are very helpful for scholarship searching.
