With a new academic year fast approaching, many high school parents ask, “What can my child do to prepare?” High school, especially senior year, is an important time in each student’s life. Here are five ways that seniors can prepare for an important academic year before it even begins!

1. Summer Reading

It’s not too late to find a good page turner at a local library or bookstore. Reading is an excellent way to prepare for the academic rigor of senior year. Additionally, it naturally expands vocabulary which leads to higher test scores. Most seniors complete numerous standardized tests in preparation for college, so take advantage of this opportunity for increased performance.

2. College Visits

Because high school students are not in school, many colleges host open house events or info sessions during the summer months. Campuses are less lively, but students can still benefit from appointments with admissions staff and tours. 3. Volunteer

For rising seniors, there is immense value in trying new and productive activities. 4. Write an Essay

On top of a full academic load, extracurricular activities and other commitments, completing college applications can feel like a daunting task. 5. Research Financial Needs

Compile a list of 10 prospectives colleges, then research tuition and living costs. Each student should have a good idea of which colleges will fit their financial needs before applying.
