4 Tips for Juniors Taking the SAT or ACT
While there’s a lot to look forward to during junior year, one particular event can send students into a panic: the college entrance test, also known as the SAT or ACT.
Taking standardized tests is an important part of the college prep process. Many factors are considered for acceptance, but scoring well on these exams can provide a competitive advantage for getting into your university of choice.
Consider these four tips for mastering the SAT or ACT.
- Do your homework — Not your literal homework, although we recommend doing that, too. 🙂 We’re talking about researching which exams are desired, or required, by your colleges of choice. Some schools prefer one test over another. Before you register for the SAT or ACT, find out which makes most sense for the path you’re pursuing.
- Practice makes perfect — Did you know that students who take practice exams score significantly higher on the actual test? Take your trial runs seriously. Give yourself a quiet space, set timers, and take note of areas where you need to kick the studying up a notch. It is advised to take at least two practice exams before heading in for the real thing.
- Start smart — If you go into the test knowing what to expect, chances are you’ll be less stressed and able to work more efficiently. You can read exam instructions online, find out if there are penalties for wrong answers, and consider how to allocate your time during the actual test based on knowledge. Starting with your strengths, skipping difficult questions, and using the process of elimination may be valuable strategies depending on the exam at hand.
- Rinse and repeat — If you didn’t get the score you were hoping for on your first try, you’re not alone. Many students take the test twice, and generally, colleges will solely consider your highest score. You want these numbers to reflect your best abilities, so don’t be afraid to sign up for a do-over. After all, an investment in your future is one worth making.
