Six Ways to Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten
As the lazy days of summer come to a close and you prepare your child for the wonderful, wild world of kindergarten, consider these helpful tips from the staff at our private elementary school in Charlotte, N.C.:
Before school starts…
Get comfortable.
Explain to your child that all children get nervous before starting something new. Encourage them to share their feelings about starting school. Are they excited? Terrified? Somewhere in between? At Northside, we offer new and incoming students the opportunity to see their future classroom and meet their teachers and classmates before the first day of school. So, take advantage of this ideal opportunity to ensure your child is as comfortable and at ease as possible.
Get active.
Find out if there are any after school activities your child would be interested in getting involved in. At Northside Christian Academy, we offer elementary school students the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, like the Lego club and chess team, and extracurricular programs, such as martial arts, music and dance.
Get ready.
While getting everything organized for the first day (pencil boxes, backpacks… the whole nine yards) is important, it’s also a good idea to talk with your child about their new daily routine and class schedule. At Northside Christian Academy, our private elementary school program typically involves the exploration of a variety of topics and subject areas, such as math, language arts, history, science, reading and Bible learning. However, time spent exploring each of these academic areas differs from classroom to classroom. Recess and lunchtime are also vital components of all elementary students’ school day.
After school starts…
Be patient.
Understand that not all children adapt to big transitions or unfamiliar surroundings as quickly as others. Give your child some time to adapt to their new learning environment and daily routine. At Northside Christian Academy, we work with students to mirror Christ’s love and build a strong foundation of trust, respect, kindness, acceptance and caring for others. In this compassionate, Biblically-based learning environment, time is likely all your child will need to thrive at our private elementary school in Charlotte, N.C.
Be reassuring.
Be sure to ask your child about everything they liked or disliked during their first few days of school. Remember, it pays to be positive. Assume everything went well and if something happened to upset your child, focus on the positive not the negative when discussing it. If you focus on the negative, your child likely will, too.
Be involved.
Struggling with separation anxiety while your child is away at school? We encourage you to stop by our school, and what’s more, to stop by to volunteer! At Northside Christian Academy, we have many opportunities available for parents looking to support or donate time to our school!
