Why Choose Christian Education?
“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The best safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt
A Different Way of Educating for a Different Kind of Citizen
More than the tools used in the classroom, consistency distinguishes Christian education. Founded on the Word of God, the will of God and the person of Jesus Christ, Christian education creates not only an engaged citizen, but a better kind of citizen entirely.
While secular education has noble goals, such as creating good citizens, Christian schools strive to do something more lasting: to cultivate joyfully obedient worshipers of God.
At Northside Christian Academy, we focus on six pennants of Christian education to create better citizens, both for the kingdom of God, and for the world. To learn more about the core of Northside’s educational philosophy and practices, we encourage you to download our free e-book. An excerpt from the introduction to this text is below:
Reality Check
Imagine a student who has grown up in a Christian home, has attended Christian schools while young, and who transitions to a secular school environment for junior high or high school. What’s the problem? Don’t kids have to grow up sometime? Don’t they have to face the “real world”?
Imagine what happens when that student inevitably encounters opposing worldviews — situational ethics, relative truth, evolution, materialism, pluralism, syncretism.
These competing value systems and philosophies dominate our secular schools and deny any absolute standard of truth and morality. Add to the noise the voices of peers and the overwhelming majority of popular authors, writers, artists, and musicians who oppose the gospel, and students find themselves quickly overloaded by the choices they have to make. And can we blame them? As a man thinks, so he does.
Now imagine that same student transitioning to a Christian junior high or high school. The pressures may not be very different, but a safety net exists. Teachers, administrators and coaches all subscribe to the same foundational truths. They teach students the same values.
They help students think through opposing viewpoints with clarity and grace, but always from the perspective of a Bible-saturated worldview. What would be the effect? An engaged, secure thinker who has the same academic opportunities as his secular peers but who recognizes that truth, wherever it is found, must measure up to one standard: God’s Truth.
As Nancy Pearcey writes in Total Truth, “As Christian parents, pastors, teachers, and youth group leaders, we constantly see young people pulled down by the undertow of powerful cultural trends. If all we give [our young people] is a ‘heart’ religion, it will not be strong enough to counter the lure of attractive but dangerous ideas.”
From Truth to Obedience to Worship
Have you ever thought about the direct connection between truth and worship? Whenever we learn some new truth, don’t our hearts automatically rejoice? It’s what happens to a child when his face lights up with an exclamation of “I didn’t know that!”
Northside Christian Academy students don’t just learn truth to have truth. They learn truth in order to rejoice in it and live in it. Their joyful obedience to truth becomes their “spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1).
